Briana's Story: Finding Her Voice and Embracing Her Future
Briana Barron never imagined that a random meeting in eighth grade would change her life.
When Briana was in 8th grade, Dr. Janet helped her with a magnet school application. In that space, Briana felt heard and valued in a way she hadn’t before. "Dr. Janet made me realize my voice mattered," she recalls. Inspired by that moment, she joined Vickery Meadow Youth Development Foundation’s EAGLE Scholars program in search of guidance and opportunities for her future.
Through high school, Briana embraced every opportunity VMYDF offered—from summer shadowing experiences to college readiness workshops. One pivotal moment came when she faced self-doubt while writing her college essays. Receiving critical feedback was tough, but the VMYDF team reassured her that her story was powerful and uniquely hers. "They reminded me that my journey was worth telling," Briana says. "That encouragement gave me the confidence to keep going."
Now a senior at SMU and attending through an almost full-ride, Briana's career path has taken an exciting turn. Initially set on pre-law, she discovered a passion for technology and switched her major to computer science. Though the transition was challenging, she credits VMYDF with helping her develop crucial skills in public speaking and interpersonal communication. "Speaking up wasn’t easy for me at first, but VMYDF helped me grow in ways I never thought possible," she says.
As a proud Mexican-American, Briana values how VMYDF embraces cultural diversity and fosters a sense of belonging. "Growing up, my cultural identity wasn’t something we talked about much. VMYDF gave me the space to embrace my roots and appreciate the beauty in my heritage."
Briana hopes to give back by mentoring young people and creating opportunities for others to thrive. "My community has given me so much, and I want to pay it forward in every way I can."
